Harvey Weinstein is still in the news cycle, heading into day three, going strong with no end in sight, even picking up speed.
This story should absolutely be told. It needs a spotlight to be shined on it. Rape culture has to be opposed at every turn. Women and other victimized people need to know that they can blow the whistle and be taken seriously without some idiot asking them what they were wearing. They need to be able to report sexual assault and see justice served without the strong possibility of being dragged through the court system and called a slut in front of the whole world and their parents. And we’re a long way from being there.
But how much coverage is too much? How many times per hour should CNN be running the headline? As I write at this moment, Anderson Cooper has devoted half his show to it.
Okay, I get it. The guy is allegedly a masher and a scumbag, and there’s an audio recording of him in the act of mashing that makes me want to remove the word “allegedly” from this sentence and throw up, not necessarily in that order. He allegedly molested famous women in addition to not-famous women, and he allegedly made sure that women who resisted his advances stayed in the non-famous category. The story is salacious with growing overtones of corruption in the New York legal system. Let’s not forget that there was allegedly a tolerance of his behavior in Hollywood, the existence of which was apparently an open secret.
And he gave money to the Democrats, including high-profile Democrats who have either been president or expressed a strong interest in the job. Did they know he was a world-class alleged scumbag? They may have heard it from a guy who heard it from a guy, but they probably didn’t have Polaroids of him in the act. So the Republicans want the Democrats to give the money back, and that’s important because Republicans never knowingly take money from alleged or actual scumbags.
There was this day in November when America elected a president who has eleven allegations of sexual assault against him, some of which are currently working their way through the legal system. Allegations, I know, are not the same as convictions. However, I can’t help but notice that this man was also recorded speaking about molesting women who, according to the president, can be grabbed by the genitalia and kissed without consent for the price of a Tic-Tac.
I like to think that they’re orange Tic-Tacs.
There are other things going on that aren’t prurient. Puerto Ricans are still suffering extreme deprivation under a completely inadequate relief effort. President Trump is working hard to ensure that there’s either a nuclear war or a Constitutional crisis if he isn’t permitted to start a nuclear war. The world is destabilizing in a way that makes the fall of the Soviet Union look like a fifth-grader potato sack race.
If all this wasn’t enough, the president wants to revoke the First Amendment and take away FCC licenses for television stations that have the temerity to report things he doesn’t like.
And Harvey Weinstein is allegedly a serial rapist. Can we keep it down to maybe twenty minutes an hour?
